Tips for when writing your own CV

Some basic tips for writing your own CV:

  • Focus around the area of employment you are seeking and construct it accordingly
  • Research for personal career planning to keep your CV factual, and targeted
  • Take time to plan the outline
  • Realise your skills!
  • Decide if you need a skills based CV, a chronological or a hybrid
  • Do use word document,  not a CV template,
  • Keep your CV interchangeable and save as different job types
  • Use 10 - 12 font
  • Use straight forward yet positive language
  • Outline key achievements
  • Account for any gaps
  • Keep to 2 pages (there are certain exceptions to this)
  • Don't waste valuable space!!
  • Set regular times to review and update

For the majority of cases do not put a photograph of your self or enter your date of birth. There is currently much debate around entering hobbies and interests, advice would be, if it is relevant to the job applied for, and you have room then, yes.

If you want us to compile your curriculum vitae the CV builder form, assists with breaking down and listing your capabilities and skills, very useful for self awareness and the processes involved with job searching.

Here, you can down load an example, skills based CV, focused around skills transfer. Please note that this CV contains employment history which covers more than the recommended 10 to 15 years. This purely to demonstrate how the skills have been transferred throughout three career changes
